David was the lead vocalist, keyboard player, co-composer and co-producer of the critically acclaimed band Not Drowning, Waving. The band won an ARIA Award for Best Independent Release in 1992 for the soundtrack to the film ‘Proof’. Not Drowning, Waving’s music straddles the worlds of rock, ambient sound and world music.

Their lyrics provided vivid descriptions of characteristically Australian topics: landscapes and people, the seasons, and regional politics – such as Indonesia’s invasion of East Timor. In 1990 the band released their ground-breaking album Tabaran which was recorded in Papua New Guinea with local musicians. The pop/rock album, infused with traditional Papuan material provoked an extended critical response, effectively being re- promoted in 1993 with the release of Mark Worth’s documentary Tabaran, and a re-release in 2005.
